Solar Energy Application : Water Purification & Desalination

Water shortages due to climatic changes, intensity of use by humans, agricultural
and technological needs is becoming acute around the globe. The
need for clean water in many countries throughout the world is already
reaching critical stages. Clean water has become more expensive
than soda in most areas. Distillation or desalination using solar
thermal may well be the appropriate technology to make clean and
drinkable water available cost-effectively. Solargenix Energy's
solar energy collection technologies, because of the possibility
in temperature ranges, are ideal for the desalination of large,
small and mid-range capacity requirements. The system may not require
a backup and operate only when the sun is shining, the technologies
are tailored toward the utilization of local water and energy sources.
- Large scale distillation or desalination plants in many
cases could be supported by the heat from parabolic trough solar collectors to
provide pre-heating or augment the steam to effect the process.
- For small-medium scale applications, solar thermal can be used in areas such as still basin, solar ponds or combined with
evaporators or vacuum distillation system to either provide hot water or steam
as the heating medium.
